More often than not, if song times are listed they are actually track times, not necessarily the true
length of the song.

1972:
Mid 1972: Fort Wayne, Indiana
Rick Kennell, Mike Beck and Cliff Fortney (vocals)
play together in local bands Zelda + Monolith (w/o Cliff Fortney) prior to Kennell going to Germany with the Army.
Autumn 1972 - early 1973: Harrisonburg, VA
Stan Whitaker, David Bach, Mike Beck, and Cliff Fortney get together (arranged by Rick Kennell)
1973:
David Bach leaves HTM to concentrate on a music degree. Whitaker first recruites Frank Wyatt and then Kit Watkins to join.
1973: Rehearsals / Demos (90min: studio)
1973: Madison College - Harrisonburg, VA (40min)
I'm not sure if this is the 73-Dec-1 show listed below or another performance
Band Lineup: *
Mike Beck
Cliff Fortney
Kit Watkins
Stanley Whitaker
Frank Wyatt
Drums, Percussion
Lead Vocals, Flute, Rhodes
Keyboards, Vocals
Electric Guitars, Vocals
Keyboards, Alto Sax, Flute, Vocals
* I'm not sure when this lineup first came about. All I know is that this was the lineup that played the 73-Dec-1 show.
73-Dec-1: Warren Campus Center, Madison College - Harrisonburg, VA
date, venue + the above band lineup provided by Debi Byrd, who attended the show as a Madison College freshman.
I'm not sure if this is the same performance as captured on the 40m recording listed above.
1974:
Early 1974: Rick Kennell returns from Germany and joins HTM. The band begins recording tracks to tape.
Band Lineup:
Mike Beck
Cliff Fortney
Rick Kennell
Kit Watkins
Stanley Whitaker
Frank Wyatt
Drums, Percussion
Lead Vocals, Flute, Rhodes
Bass
Keyboards, Vocals
Electric Guitars, Vocals
Keyboards, Alto Sax, Flute, Vocals
74-May-3: Wilson Hall, Madison College - Harrisonburg, VA (1CD)
mid-late 1974: Cliff Fortney leaves HTM after about 20 or so performances, to study flute.
Cliff supposedly suffered from stage fright and was being outpaced by the other band members' technical abilities.
From a 97-May-29 article about Dog Talk (Mike Beck's band):
Cliff Fortney (who played with M Beck in a band named Zelda as high schoolers in Fort Wayne), provides the keyboard,
flute, harmonica, and penny whistle music, in addition to his singing and songwriting abilities. At 44, Fortney is
a mild-mannered insurance company worker by day. He and his brother Tom, keep Dog Talk on the Internet and maintain
the band's web page.
Cliff also appears on French TV's 2002 album The Case Against Art
Rick Kennell's and Mike Beck’s friend from Indiana, Dan Owen, replaces Cliff Fortney.
Band Lineup:
Mike Beck
Rick Kennell
Dan Owen
Kit Watkins
Stanley Whitaker
Frank Wyatt
Drums, Percussion
Bass
Lead Vocals, Classical Guitar, Percussion, sometimes extra Bass
Keyboards, Vocals
Electric Guitars, Vocals
Keyboards, Alto Sax, Flute, Vocals
During the period when Dan Owen was in the band, Happy The Man embarked on their ambitious
Death’s Crown, a multimedia work which involved a sophisticated light show and a dance
troop. It was only performed a handful of times. (In some ways this was similar
to Pink Floyd's 1972-1973 Roland Petit Ballet venture, which also was only performed a
handful of times.) The discovery of a long-lost rehearsal tape (a continuous 38 min
suite divided into 11 parts) was released by the band in 1999.

setting up the shows they did at Cabell Hall in Charlottesville), Dan Owen was no longer with the band by this point.
74-Oct ?: WGTB-FM Georgetown Univ - Washington, DC (1CD)
I've seem a setlist for this that is identical to the 75-Sept WGTB setlist. I have a strong
feeling that they are the same recordings. Though I cannot say for sure, at this point I think
the 75-Sept date is correct, due to the inclusion of Stump Meets The Firecracker, which I don't
think the band had written until the summer of 1975. Again, this is just my current opinion and
I may be wrong.

Interesting story. I live in Williamsburg and for all the searching I've done, I've never come across
any evidence that the Rainbow's End actually existed. I finally asked some friends of ours who are in the
the music business (he works with many stadium-filling bands as the tour accountant and she was a record
label exec and now works for fellow Williamsburg neighbor Bruce Hornsby). Though she was away
from Williamsburg during this time period, she said if anyone would know it would be Bruce. So she
asked him. Six hours later I got this response:
"Rainbow's End was a great rock club located in the basement under Paul's Deli and the Green Leafe.
We played there several times 1979-1980. Lots of medium-level national acts played there as well,
like The George Duke-Stanley Clarke Band. Happy The Man was a well-known fusion band from DC, and their
heyday was circa 1974-1979. There you have it! - brh"
Now I know. Sweet.

I previously thought that this was a misdated show, but that may be incorrect. Amy Felton Brown wrote me
"I saw HTM at Cabell Hall, but I can say for certain that it was after January 1, 1977. I can also say for certain that I remember
the song title "Stumpy Meets The Firecracker". I can't say for sure that it was November 25, 1977, especially since that was the day after Thanksgiving;
but it's possible." She said it was possibly in the spring of 1977, but not as likely as November.

Early 1978: Mike Beck leaves Happy The Man
Part of the reason for Mike Beck leaving had to do with the new material being written by
Wyatt, Watkins and Whitaker, which Mike felt had a coarser, harder-edged sound that, did not
fit his playing style, which was based at least as much on the use of all manner of
percussion than the conventional drum kit. Musical disagreements reached a head in early 1978,
when he and the band mutually decided to go their separate ways.

1979:
79-Feb: The band records a new round of demos at the band house in Reston, Virginia
"Following the release of Crafty Hands, Arista terminates their contract with the band.
This in turn led to management problems, and in a matter of weeks Happy The Man was
without either a management or record deal. In an effort to get a new recording contract,
the band recorded the above mentioned demos. Unfortunately, no contract is secured, thereby
sealing Happy The Man's fate. The demo material was posthumously released in 1983 as
"Better Late..." on Kit Watkins’ own Azimuth label."
~ Aymeric Leroy
79-Feb-7: Ron Curtiss & Aaron Weiner interview Andrew Latimer + Andy Ward
of Camel at 7pm at the Sunset Maruis Hotel
"We did not do the Boffomundo Show yet, so we got a writer from UCLA (where I attended briefly)
to have it printed in the Daily Bruin. I just found the article and we are not mentioned,
and the writer didn't assume that role, just delivered the facts from the interview.
One interesting and historic thing happened: we asked (Latimer + Ward) if they had
heard of Happy The Man, the awesome and totally underrated US prog band. They were
signed to Arista as well and while they had never heard of them, we arranged for Arista
to get them a copy. Next thing we read is that keyboardist Kit Watkins had joined Camel!
Years later, we contacted Kit Watkins and he confirmed that he was found through
'two guys who interviewed band members and turned Andy Latimer on to HTM.' We were honored
to have contributed to the history of a favourite band."

"While I was taking pictures, Coco's wife came up to me and gave me a
business card, with her and Coco's name on it (still have it somewhere),
and asked me to let them know if I got any good pictures (unfortunately
no good shots of Coco). She also told me that the band was bummed,
as Arista had dropped them and they were hoping for a good show and good
audience response."

79-Apr-24: George Washington Hall, Mary Washington College - Fredericksburg, VA
here is a ticket from the show
Supported by Hartwood
"They headlined a show at the then Mary Washington College on April 24, 1979.
It is now called the University of Mary Washington. It was a fantastic show and
I was just mesmerized by the stunning display of talent taking place eight miles
from my house. Coco was on drums (and just about everything else) and was superb.
I had been a huge fan of them for a good while and when this show came along
I was ecstatic to say the least. Wow, what a time this was to be alive !
I sure miss those days now and if I could go back in time there would not be a
moment of hesitation on my part. Happy The Man was and still is one of my all
time favorites and they certainly deserved much better than they ever got.
Thanks for the site. Take Care."

79-May-29: Alexander's - Browns Mills, NJ
Opening for Nektar
"I do remember them playing a couple of tunes from "Better Late...", but I
really can't remember which ones (I wish I had kept a set list, but
back in those days, that was the furthest thing from my mind). After the
show, I sat down with the band and they viewed the slides I had taken at the
79-Apr-20 show. Certainly a night I'll always remember. I think this may
have been their last show.
~ Rick
79-May-?: Madison College * - Harrisonburg, VA
Last performance by the 1970's band (according to the band's website)
* At this point, the school was called James Madison University -
Madison College was the school's original name, but it was
changed in 1977)
79-May : HTM Disbands
1983:
1983: The band releases their 3rd album, culled from the demos recorded at the band house in Reston, Virginia during 79-Feb.
The original 3rd LP looked very different from the current cd. I prefer the original LP look, which was more simplistic, less cluttered
Here are pictures of my LP, which I picked up sometime during 1985-1986 at the great

"We almost didn't get the chance to open at State as Frank's Kurzweil 2500 died at soundcheck.
They were able to get a rental but it was a 2600 and the files didn't load exactly so he had
to do a bit of manual labor. We were able to get on and open for them but without ANY soundcheck."

The 2005 Birchmere show was canceled by the venue with little notice. Because of general admission
policies and no difference in price for buying in advance, many fans planned to buy at the venue on
the day of the show. The club said that poor presales caused the cancellation. Upwards of 80 fans
showed up on the day of the show only to be told of the cancellation even though we put notice out
as quickly as we could.
~ Bill Plummer
05-Sept-3: Progday 2005 ~ Storybook Farm - Chapel Hill, NC
Happy The Man broke up in late 2005 mostly due to difficulties in rehearsal schedules.
The traveling distances were the main factor, as the band was split between New York,
New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia.
