Early 1974:    Rick Kennell returns from Germany and joins HTM. The band begins recording tracks to tape.

mid-late 1974:    Cliff Fortney leaves HTM after about 20 or so performances, to study flute.

Cliff supposedly suffered from stage fright and was being outpaced by the other band members' technical abilities.

From a 97-May-29 article about Dog Talk (Mike Beck's band):
Cliff Fortney (who played with M Beck in a band named Zelda as high schoolers in Fort Wayne), provides the keyboard, flute, harmonica, and penny whistle music, in addition to his singing and songwriting abilities. At 44, Fortney is a mild-mannered insurance company worker by day. He and his brother Tom, keep Dog Talk on the Internet and maintain the band's web page.

Cliff also appears on French TV's 2002 album The Case Against Art


Rick Kennell's and Mike Beck’s friend from Indiana, Dan Owen, replaces Cliff Fortney.

During the period when Dan Owen was in the band, Happy The Man embarked on their ambitious Death’s Crown, a multimedia work which involved a sophisticated light show and a dance troop. It was only performed a handful of times.  (In some ways this was similar to Pink Floyd's 1972-1973 Roland Petit Ballet venture, which also was only performed a handful of times.)  The discovery of a long-lost rehearsal tape (a continuous 38 min suite divided into 11 parts) was released by the band in 1999.

Though I cannot say for sure, at this point I think the 75-Sept date is correct, due to the inclusion of Stump Meets The Firecracker, which I don't think the band had written until the summer of 1975. Again, this is just my current opinion and I may be wrong.

Interesting story.  I live in Williamsburg and for all the searching I've done, I've never come across any evidence that the Rainbow's End actually existed.  I finally asked some friends of ours who are in the the music business (he works with many stadium-filling bands as the tour accountant and she was a record label exec and now works for fellow Williamsburg neighbor Bruce Hornsby).  Though she was away from Williamsburg during this time period, she said if anyone would know it would be Bruce.  So she asked him.  Six hours later I got this response:

"Rainbow's End was a great rock club located in the basement under Paul's Deli and the Green Leafe.  We played there several times 1979-1980.  Lots of medium-level national acts played there as well, like The George Duke-Stanley Clarke Band.  Happy The Man was a well-known fusion band from DC, and their heyday was circa 1974-1979.  There you have it! - brh"

Now I know.  Sweet.

"They headlined a show at the then Mary Washington College on April 24, 1979.  It is now called the University of Mary Washington.  It was a fantastic show and I was just mesmerized by the stunning display of talent taking place eight miles from my house.  Coco was on drums (and just about everything else) and was superb.  I had been a huge fan of them for a good while and when this show came along I was ecstatic to say the least.  Wow, what a time this was to be alive !  I sure miss those days now and if I could go back in time there would not be a moment of hesitation on my part.  Happy The Man was and still is one of my all time favorites and they certainly deserved much better than they ever got.  Thanks for the site.  Take Care."

After the show, I sat down with the band and they viewed the slides I had taken at the 79-Apr-20 show. Certainly a night I'll always remember. I think this may have been their last show.

"We almost didn't get the chance to open at State as Frank's Kurzweil 2500 died at soundcheck.  They were able to get a rental but it was a 2600 and the files didn't load exactly so he had to do a bit of manual labor.  We were able to get on and open for them but without ANY soundcheck."

The 2005 Birchmere show was canceled by the venue with little notice. Because of general admission policies and no difference in price for buying in advance, many fans planned to buy at the venue on the day of the show. The club said that poor presales caused the cancellation. Upwards of 80 fans showed up on the day of the show only to be told of the cancellation even though we put notice out as quickly as we could.
